A police inspector was arrested by Anti Corruption Bureau for allegedly accepting a bribe from a man whose son he had arrested last month.
ACB officials identified the accused as Manohar Gaware,an inspector with Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station in Kurla. On May 26,Gaware had arrested a Kurla resident in connection with a robbery, who was later remanded to judicial custody on June 1. The father of the arrested person then applied for bail.
On June 2,the father of the accused met Gaware at the police station and requested him to file a favourable report with the court regarding his sons bail application. Gaware demanded Rs one lakh in exchange. When the two met again on June 7,Gaware demanded Rs 25,000, said an ACB official.
Afterward, the father approached the ACB,who after their own investigation, registered a complaint against Gaware under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Acting on ACBs instructions, the father contacted Gaware and said he was willing to pay the bribe. A meeting was fixed near Al Barkat Islam English School in Kurla on Wednsday. As soon as Gaware accepted the money, plainclothes ACB officials moved in and arrested Gaware.
