Another aspect that Mumbai University’s website does not mention is placement profile of passouts, as mentioned in the UGC notice.
With the new Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor (V-C), Sanjay Deshmukh, making his views clear on the importance of going digital, he may first have to look at the university’s own website that is not quite up to the mark. Key information like research output of the university, teachers’ faculty-wise profiles and the structure of fees charged for each course, along with other funds for institutional development, are missing on the site.
In a circular, released recently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all universities to have such information on their website for the benefit of students who want to seek admission at their institutions. The circular, released on June 2, has directed all vice chancellors to take appropriate steps and report the action taken within 15 days.

The circular also directs institutes to display all relevant approvals from statutory bodies, accreditation ranking of the institution, details of students grievance redressal mechanism, name of the nodal officer for students’ facilitation services, scholarships or freeships available, details of the departments which have been recognised as centre of excellence by statutory and funding bodies, calendar of activities, academic calender and relevant information regarding admission procedure and availability of seats in various courses.
Another aspect that Mumbai University’s website does not mention is placement profile of passouts, as mentioned in the UGC notice. The university, however, does not have a separate placement cell or a system of campus placements. On Tuesday, while briefing the media, Deshmukh had said that the university is unable to have campus placements as both postgraduate level and PhD level education is imparted in colleges too and therefore, there cannot be any fixed agenda for a campus interview. Further, certain departments of the university have complete autonomy in terms of their functioning.
“Some information asked in the UGC circular is not there on our website. Currently, we have the relevant sections to provide the latest information. After getting other relevant information, we will include that on our website,” said university registrar M A Khan.
Meanwhile, in another development, UGC released the statement showing position of grant allocated and released year-wise and expenditure reported by the state universities under the general development assistance scheme during XII Plan period, upto March 31, 2015. As far as Mumbai University is concerned, the statement shows that while total grant released is Rs 1332.40 lakh, expenditure reported is nil.
