Hundreds of teachers barged into the office of deputy director of education at Charni Road and gheraoed him on Monday. The teachers along with the the Mumbai Junior College Teachers Union (MJCTU) had staged the protest citing corruption by employees of the department.
They have alleged that assistant director of education,Mumbai,N B Chavan, has been demanding bribe from teachers to get them approved. Anil Deshmukh, president,MJCTU,said,It has been going on for the past few years and our union has filed several complaints on the issue but to no avail.
The union also alleged that Chavan has been threatening and put pressure on those teachers who are getting their approval with the help of union. Deshmukh added,Approval of some teachers was done through us. Due to this,Chavan lost out on his commission and had tried putting pressure on these teachers through the principals of their respective schools to pay him. Not only this, teachers who are not willing to pay are left in lurch as their approvals are pending for years now. We have given the department a weeks time to take action against Chavan and put an end to this corruption.
Vidya Pandey,a teacher from a junior college at Kalyan, said,Chavan had demanded money from me for getting my post approved and when I refused,he told me that I would find it difficult to get it done without him. And my approval is still pending.
When contacted,N B Chavan said,These are all false allegations against me. I am doing my work legally. Let the state government initiate inquiry against me and let the teachers union prove if I have done anything wrong.
