A 45-year-old jeweller from Kalbadevi lodged a complaint with the LT Marg police after cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 5.1 crore went missing from his shop in south Mumbai.

Police said the jeweller accused his landlord and his colleagues of stealing the valuables, following which one of the landlord’s accomplice was apprehended on Tuesday.

According to police, Vikram Kumar Jain, a jeweller, said that he had taken shop number 27 at Kalbadevi on rent from one Sanjay Goyal by paying a deposit of Rs 27 lakhs.

“The complainant and his employees are into buying and selling gold and were running a gold business from the rented shop,” said a police officer.

On June 17, one of the employees called Jain and informed him that Goyal was in Kalbadevi and he was not allowing them to enter the shop, said police.

Jain then tried reaching out to his landlord but he was not answering the calls. Goyal and his colleague Dyaneshwar Bhuvad even changed the lock of the shop, said police.

On Sunday, police said Jain approached police and complained that about 4kg of gold Rs 2.60 crore and Rs 2.5 crore cash was stolen from the safe inside the shop. “We have learnt that Goyal and his accomplice broke the lock of the main door, after which they went inside and stole the cash and ornaments from the safe,” said a police officer investigating the case.
