A 28-year-old man from Jalna district allegedly died by suicide after facing online harassment and threats over a video showing him urinating near a railway station signboard. The Ashti police have registered a case against seven individuals for allegedly abetting the suicide.

The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Aade, a resident of Dhokmal village in Paratwada taluka. Aade, the only son of his parents, had completed his MBA and was previously working with the panchayat samiti on a contract basis. According to the police, he left the job a few months ago at his parents’ insistence to focus on the family’s agricultural land, spread over more than 10 acres.

A video recorded by a group of youths showed Aade and a friend allegedly relieving themselves under the recently painted board of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Railway Station – the new name for Aurangabad Railway Station, notified on October 15, 2025. Those who filmed the video alleged Aade had done so intentionally to disrespect the historical figure.

The clip went viral across social media platforms, triggering a surge of trolling, abuse and threats. Though Aade and his friend uploaded an apology video, the harassment did not stop. “He was disturbed as he was receiving a lot of abuse both on social media as well as on his phone. On November 4, the railway police came to our residence, where he apologised again and even recorded a video. However, he continued receiving life-threatening calls, and he took his own life on Wednesday,” Aade’s uncle told local reporters.

The police said Aade left home early on November 5 without informing his family. When he did not return, relatives began searching for him. His mobile phone and slippers were found near their farm well. Local residents went down the well and recovered his body. Aade’s body has been sent for a post-mortem.

“He was being threatened after the video went viral, and he died by suicide on November 5 at around 10 am by jumping into a well,” said Assistant Police Inspector Ganesh Survase of Ashti police station.

Based on the family’s complaint, the Ashti police have registered a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against seven people allegedly involved in circulating the video, trolling Aade, and issuing threats. “We have identified two out of the seven accused, and a team has gone to nab them. There are thousands of messages and many Instagram accounts – we are verifying which accounts sent threats or repeatedly circulated the clip with malicious intent,” Survase said.
