Jack is Back

When I finally saw the whole movie put together,it was one of the proudest moments of my career. Now,Po is having flashbacks of his childhood,before he lived with his father,who’s a goose. So he comes to realise that he’s actually adopted,and he doesn’t know where his birth parents are or what happened to the other pandas. So in addition to this being a hero’s journey to save the day,it’s also a journey of self-discovery.

Who will Po be battling in this new movie?

The villain this time around is an evil peacock,Shen,and it’s played by one of my favorite actors of all time,Gary Oldman. I’ve always drawn a lot of inspiration from his performances,way back to Sid and Nancy.

In what ways has Kung Fu Panda 2 surpassed the

previous movie?

I just really didn’t get how the filmmakers would top the amazing sequences they had with Tai Lung in the first film. But that’s what they did. There’s this enormous pagoda that is Lord Shen’s headquarters,and just in renderings,it is breathtaking. In two dimensions,it’ll blow you away. In 3D,it’ll blow your whole family away with you,and they may not even be in the theatre.

Did the two movies inspire you to try out kung fu?

Yes,I did some training in kung fu,for both films. What drew me is that there’s a combination of exercise and self-defence,along with a spiritual component. When you’re really practising kung fu,living and feeling it,there’s a meditative quality that seeps in.
