IMD: Dry patch to continue till Sunday

After consistent rains last week, which spilled over to the first half of this week, the dry conditions experienced on Wednesday and Thursday will continue till Sunday, said the Met department. However,it cannot be called a dry spell.

“Even though it is not raining in Mumbai,it is raining elsewhere hence this is not a dry spell. But the activity has definitely reduced,” said V K Rajeev, director,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

From Wednesday morning to Thursday evening,Colaba received only 5 mm rainfall, while Santacruz received even lesser at 0.7 mm. This compared to Tuesday, when it rained throughout the day and Colaba received 19.5 mm rainfall and Santacruz received 51 mm. The maximum temperature has also climbed up two degrees since then to settle at 30°C,while the minimum is 26°C.

“There are indications that the monsoon trough has moved north of its normal position and even though the offshore trough is still there, the cloud cover over our area has moved away,” said Rajeev, explaining the reason for the city temporarily experiencing a dry patch. The monsoon activity will gradually decrease even further over the next few days. “The rest of the week will see rainfall reducing every day and the city should be free of rain on the weekend. Beyond that,we will have to wait for another weather system to form to bring rain to the city,” added Rajeev.

Two lakes are overflowing

Two of the six lakes supplying water to the city have started overflowing due to good rains in the catchment areas. Modaksagar, one of the major lakes, started overflowing on Wednesday night. “This time, the lake started overflowing earlier than last year,” said a civic official. In 2010,Modaksagar had started overflowing on July 27. So far,the lake has received 873.40 mm rainfall during this monsoon, while it had received 635.60 mm rainfall this time last year. Last week, the smaller lake,Tulsi, had started overflowing owing to incessant and heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.
