The security apparatus at city hospitals has seen a major change since the 26/11 attacks.

Hospitals are now seeking a certification from the National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Healthcare Providers (NABH),a constituent board of quality council of India. “To get a NABH certification there are certain security standards that need to be followed. In Mumbai around 250 hospitals with 100 beds and more have applied for NABH certification,” said Dr Vivek Desai, managing director,Hosmac India.

Among the hospitals that have upgraded security measures is the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute,Oshiwara. The hospital has stationed baggage scanning machines at all three entry points. “All the baggage will be scanned before entering the hospital. 144 close circuit television cameras are placed at strategic locations,” said Dr Ram Narain,COO. South Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital has employed armed guards at the entrance. “The hospital is in a very strategic location so armed guards are a necessity. Other security measures like CCTV cameras and security personnel have been increased,” said Col M Masand,CEO Jaslok Hospital. At civic-run King Edward Memorial Hospital, only cars with a hospital sticker and details of the hospital staffer are allowed on the premises. “Cameras are installed at Sion and Nair Hospital. At KEM and Sion hospitals only two gates have been kept open and at Nair Hospital only the main gate is open,” said Dr Sanjay Oak,dean KEM Hospital.

Moving squads have been appointed to guard the state-run JJ Hospital. Retired personnel from the armed forces will soon be patrolling the state-run hospitals. “We have given blanket permission to all the 19 hospitals in the state to recruit ex servicemen as guards,” said Dr Pravin Shingare, joint director at DMER.
