HC refuses relief to slumdwellers at SGNP

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking extension of the deadline for accepting new applications for the rehabilitation scheme for slumdwellers in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking extension of the deadline for accepting new applications for the rehabilitation scheme for slumdwellers in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

While dismissing the petition,Chief Justice Mohit Shah said,”The deadline has already been extended as many as seven times. It is not possible to extend it any further, especially when the present inhabitants have not given any proof of eligibility.”

State government counsel K R Belosay said,”The people who are living there have said that they have proof of eligibility, but have not annexed any of it to their petition.”

The lawyer representing a slum dweller contended,”These are people who are below the poverty line and are often not aware of these schemes. It is certainly possible for the scheme to incorporate a few hundred more candidates. It requires time and effort, but it is a question of their entire livelihood.”
