The Raigad police arrested 10 people involved in a cheating racket during the recruitment exam for police constables conducted in Raigad last month.

The accused were caught using electronic devices and bluetooth to copy answers during the exam held on August 10.

A police officer said the incident came to light after authorities noticed suspicious activity at several exam centers in Alibag and Pen talukas. Upon investigation, it was discovered that candidates were using concealed electronic devices to communicate with accomplices outside the exam hall.

“We received credible information about cheating attempts during the exam,” said Somnath Gharge, Superintendent of Police, Raigad.

“We immediately formed special teams to monitor the exam centres closely and intercept any suspicious activity,” Gharge said.

The arrested individuals, hailing from various districts in Maharashtra, were using sophisticated technology to cheat. They were found to have concealed electronic devices in their ears and were communicating with accomplices who were providing answers remotely.

“The accused used advanced technology to execute their plan,” said inspector Balasaheb Khade, head of the local crime investigation branch. “We had to take help from the cyber police to uncover their methods.”

An officer said last month, the cheating came to light during the exams, following which they registered an FIR and arrested six students.

“Later, during further probe, we found the involvement of a gang that took money in exchange of helping aspirants cheat in the exams. A total of 10 people belonging to the gang hailing from various parts of the state have been arrested,” said a police officer.

Police have registered cases against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC and the Maharashtra University, Board, and Other Examinations (Prevention of Malpractices) Act, 1982.
