Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar (Express File Photo) Alleging that Rs 41,243 crore supplementary demands are being distributed to those constituencies whose leaders could not be made ministers in the state cabinet, the Congress on Monday, said it will approach court unless the ‘injustice’ meted out by Finance department headed by Nationalist Congress Party’s Ajit Pawar is removed.
“The funds are being distributed to break MLAs and later to take care of them since they can’t be made ministers,” said Congress Legislative Party leader Balasaheb Thorat. Thorat alleged that NCP MLAs have been given undue priority by Pawar’s department so much so that even those within BJP have been sidelined. “Almost 65% of funds have been distributed among only 100 of 288 MLAs,” said Thorat.
“Is this the balanced development you are talking about, where one constituency gets hundreds of crores of rupees, while the other gets nothing? Unless this injustice is removed, we will approach the court,” he said.
According to sources, NCP MLAs have been given funds worth more than Rs 25 crore for their respective constituencies while BJP and Sena MLAs too have been allotted money. Interestingly, constituencies of Congress MLAs have suffered.
“Funds for developmental programmes matter the most to newcomer MLAs, unlike those who have won the election twice or thrice. Lack of funds and works make it difficult for newcomers to tackle the electorate,” a leader from Congress said.
Thorat, at the Assembly, said the present government, since it came to power in June 2022, has presented supplementary demands worth Rs 1.20 lakh crore, which demonstrates absolute lack of financial discipline. “The previous monsoon session witnessed demands worth Rs 25,000 crore, later in winter they demanded Rs 52,000 crore, and now it is Rs 41,000 crore. This money is being distributed merely through supplementary demands which is not a sign of a healthy economy,” he said.
He claimed that while the government was distributing money through supplementary demands, it has not paid Rs 50,000 crore due for works completed under Public Works Department.
