Four persons including the alleged mastermind of the firing on a real estate agent in Kandivali were arrested by the Mumbai crime branch from a forest in Pune where they were holed up, on Friday. It took the crime branch team more than a day to look through the forest to eventually get all the four accused.

The main arrested accused Rajesh Chauhan alias Daya (42) knew the victim Freddy D’Lima as they resided in the same locality. The police suspect that the dispute was over financial reasons but there will be further clarity after interrogation.

Chauhan has several cases against him and was arrested in the infamous murder of Bunty Pradhan, the proprietor of Dolphin Properties in April 2014 in Mira Road.

A crime branch officer said that apart from Chauhan, who was the mastermind, the three shooters arrested have been identified as Subhash Mohite (44), a Virar resident, Mangesh Chaudhari (40), a Pune resident and Roshan Singh alias Krishna (25), a Thane resident. The local police station too had arrested one person.

A crime branch officer said, “The probe has been handed over to us. We will interrogate the accused to get clarity on who all were involved and their roles. Accordingly, we will file the chargesheet.” The police suspect a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) plot that was being developed by D’Lima may have been one of the reasons for the dispute.

On Wednesday, D’Lima, a 42-year-old real estate agent, was shot at by three unidentified assailants in Kandivali (West). The police said D’Lima was shot at around 2 pm when he was leaving a school in Ganesh Nagar after meeting someone. As soon as he stepped out, three persons, who were waiting outside, opened fire at him. One bullet hit his abdomen and another hit on his chest, the police said.

According to the police, the bike rider and one pillion were wearing helmets, while the third man was wearing a cap. The shooters had covered their faces with masks, police said.
