According to police, the suspect cleared his MTech in June 2025 and had gone to the institute to meet his friend, and also seeking jobs, as campus placements were underway.

He stayed with his friend in the hostel room and clicked pictures and recorded videos on his mobile phone of a few students when they were taking bath in the hostel, said the officer.

The students caught him and handed him over to the security officials.

“We have conducted an inquiry, and few videos were found in his mobile phone,” said the officer.

However, police said that neither the students nor security guards were initially ready to register a complaint against the suspect.

But after thorough inquiry, police recorded the statement of the security officer of the IIT on Thursday, and based on his statement, an FIR was registered under section 66 (e) (capturing, publishing, or transmitting private images without consent) of the IT Act against the suspect, said a senior officer.

“After knowing about multiple videos, everybody on campus is anxious thinking about possibilities of them being a victim to a similar act,” said a student adding that the administration has not provided clear information on the incident.

In an official response, IIT Bombay, stated, “Our initial information suggests that he is not a student of IIT Bombay.”
