A class project has turned into an awareness campaign for these Jai Hind College students, and that too on an issue they feel strongly about littering.
The five third-year Bachelor in Mass Media students Charvi Bubna,Sanya Lakhani,Alia Advani,Karina Chowgule and Jehana Vazifdar had launched a campaign,Kachra Katti,as part of their copywriting project. They drove a car with garbage stuck all over it through the streets of South Mumbai last week to discourage people from littering.
The message was simple: Dont like what you see? Dont litter. We wanted to target those who dispose garbage from their car windows, says Vazifdar. We wanted to create awareness about littering and since it is a problem for the whole city,we came up with this idea.
The Kachra Katti car went from Worli to Breach Candy and back on September 23,raising many an eyebrow along the way. At Worli Naka,we were stopped by some policemen who wanted to know what we were doing. They appeciated us when we told them and let us go, Vazifdar says.
The group also took up another activity in and around their college; they secretly shot videos of people littering. Whenever someone was about to litter, members of the group would surround the person, blow a whistle and shout,How can he/she chuck?. With more members joining in,we get the person to dispose waste in the bin and promise not to litter, saying Katti to Kachra into the camera, he says.
Even policemen were caught littering by these students. The group also distributed chocolates to those who rightfully dumped garbage in the bin.
