Fire safety: BMC plans heavy fine on defaulters

The BMC’s Fire Department plans heavy penalties on builders found flouting fire safety norms. It is also contemplating criminal proceedings against repeat offenders.

The BMC’s Fire Department plans heavy penalties on builders found flouting fire safety norms. It is also contemplating criminal proceedings against repeat offenders.

The civic body now seeks to crack down on developers and occupants who don’t follow fire safety rules.

Starting next week,the BMC will send engineers to inspect residential and commercial buildings for their fire preparedness and if the structure is in accordance with fire-safety rules of the Development Control Regulations. “We will first inspect buildings and then issue notices to them. If they fail to comply we will levy a fine on them,” said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.

The fire-safety rules make it mandatory for buildings to have fire exits,proper ventilation,installation of fire-fighting equipment.
