‘Family dramas bore me’

What prompts Ram Gopal Varma to keep trying even after a string of flops?
A film is a sum total of a series of decisions taken by the maker. You don’t make a film knowing its outcome. If it fails, you learn from its mistakes. Moreover,my films are unconventional so the risk is always higher.

Horror is not a popular genre here but it has always enticed you. With Agyaat are you treading the tough path again?
It is wrong to say that horror is not popular; it deals with fear which is universal. It is a tough genre because it involves technical elements and you need to get performances out of characters. My films Bhoot and Phoonk were huge hits because they arrested the imagination of the audiences. With Agyaat I will show the ordinary life of a person trapped in an extraordinary situation. Just the camera angles will nurture your fear.

But it’s still a risk?
Success isn’t guaranteed even if you make a love story. So why not deal with horror?

You once made stars out of nobodies, but of late all your lead actors seem to have faded after their first release?
I don’t make movies to launch actors. It is not my business. When a particular actor works in my film,it is because he/she has seen some potential in the script and not because I have promised to design their careers.

You have never worked with Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan.
There is no particular reason. I usually write a script and then do the casting. I don’t keep an actor in mind and script. So far I haven’t come across any suitable roles for them.

So you don’t really care for stardom?
Stardom is important for commercial success, not to make a good film.

So then why cast Amitabh Bachchan?
Nobody else could have done justice to the roles in Sarkar and that of Babban Singh. There is a certain amount of baggage he carries with him that makes him larger than life.

Is there a chance of Aamir Khan and you burying your differences and working together?
No,never.

Urmila Matondkar or Antara Mali too haven’t worked with you in a while.
As I said earlier,I cast actors who fit the role. If there is a suitable role for Antara or Urmila I will get in touch with them. At the moment, nothing.

Most filmmakers take around two to three years to make a film, you make two to three films in a year. How?
I am a filmmaker and all I do is make films. It isn’t that difficult.

Why haven’t you experimented with family dramas considering they do so well?
Family dramas bore me. I don’t find simple stories interesting. A film like Hum Aapke Hain Koun may have 100 takers and Bhoot may have 10. But if I try my hand at family dramas,I might lose even those 10.

What happened to the Hollywood remake of Bhoot?
I am not remaking Bhoot. I am working on a Hollywood project but that will take a while because I will have to go to the US and stay there for a few months.

What’s next?
Rann releases end of this year and a 3-D film called Warning which I am working on.

After Sholay,Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag,fared so badly, are you planning to dabble with any more remakes?
You’ve heard the popular saying: Never say never.
