The Mumbai police Monday arrested a 25-year-old person who fled with gold jewellery worth Rs 48 lakh and Rs 10 lakh in cash belonging to his employer, a Chembur-based jewellery wholesaler.

The arrested accused Suresh Gujjar told the police that after having access to such a large amount, he went to a dance bar, where he ended splurging some of the cash. He claimed that he was scared of telling his employer about it and hence decided to flee with the jewellery and cash.

DCP (Zone VI) Hemraj Rajput said, “Soon after we received the complaint and an FIR was registered at the Chembur police station on March 9, we formed two teams to investigate the matter. The person responsible for the same was arrested from outside the city, and we have recovered the complete stolen jewellery. We have not yet recovered the cash and we are questioning him to find out where it has been kept.”

An officer said that Gujjar had been working with the jewellery shop owner for the past five to six years along with two other employees who would pick up jewellery from his employer’s residence — from where he operated his office — and provide it to jewellery shops that had placed orders with his employer. On March 8 too, Gujjar picked up jewellery from the employer’s residence and left around noon. When he did not return and neither responded to phone calls from other employee, one of them informed their employer who was in Pune at that time.

When Gujjar did not return the next day as well, the employer returned to the city and got an FIR registered at the Chembur police station. Two police teams were formed that managed to track down Gujjar to the periphery of the city and placed him under arrest. An officer said that when they found Gujjar and checked his bag and clothes, they couldn’t find the jewellery.

“Gujjar told us that he would only tell where the jewellery was when he meets the employer. Once in front of the employer, he opened his shirt and revealed a vest he was wearing which had multiple pockets in which the jewellery was kept,” an officer said.

The police found all the stolen jewellery hidden in the vest. However, they are questioning him about Rs 10 lakh cash he stole. He was brought to the city and produced before the court which remanded him to police custody for two days.
