Elderly targets: Police to re-probe cases unsolved since 2008

The city has recently witnessed a spate of senior citizens’ murders.

The city has recently witnessed a spate of senior citizens’ murders. In fact, police records reveal that there have been 45 such cases from 2008 to 2011. Of these, the police have cracked 36 cases, with nine are yet to be solved.

Senior Crime Branch officers said they will now revisit the unsolved cases with a fresh perspective, considering that in nine of the 10 senior citizen murders cracked this year, the killers were known to them or were their relatives.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said although nine cases are unsolved, the police are working on fresh angles to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Roy said the police will now probe whether the victims might have known their killers.

While 11 senior citizens were murdered this year, the police have solved 10 of these cases. Investigations have shown an alarming trend where the victim knew the killer and was murdered for several reasons ranging from land disputes, quarrels and monetary gains.

“We have to probe the undetected cases with these angles. The trend where the victim and the killer knew each other is disturbing. We will now investigate the cases with these angles to try and ascertain if any of the nine victims whose killers are still at large knew them,” said Roy.

“All clues will be re-examined. In the wake of the nine cases this year where the killer knew the victim,we will be investigating on a micro level,” he said.

“Cases like murder are high priority for us and we want to nab the killers soon. Our investigations are on and now will have fresh angles,” assured Roy.
