To prevent private couriers being used as a mode of trafficking drugs, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in its regional co-ordination meeting on Wednesday decided to step up vigilance.

Chaired by O P S Malik,DG,Narcotics Control Bureau, the meeting was attended by law enforcement agencies including the Intelligence Bureau,Border Guarding Force,Coast Guard,Customs,Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Food and Drug Administration.

Reviewing the measures taken in the last two years,a senior NCB official said,“We have been sensitising the courier agencies about the need for checks at the counter. Going forward,we are looking into creating databank of profiling the parcels.”

“In the last few months, this has been done by sending detailed modus operandi in an organised fashion to all the courier agencies. For instance, when we find anything in a particular cavity of shoe, which is different from the regular cavity used,we update the information pool shared between us and the courier agencies,” added the official.

According to agencies,Mumbai is still the only place where the drug can be intercepted before it leaves the country. The officials observed that it would be impossible to educate all the courier agencies across the region. “We found out that all the courier agencies have their main hub in Mumbai. So every item reaches the network’s main parcel distribution hub in Mumbai. This is where we will start introducing more training,” said the officer.
