The Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) of the Indian Railways at Lucknow has successfully carried out a test run of Indias first high-speed,double-decker air-conditioned chair car.
The test run was completed recently and the coach was found fit to run at a maximum speed of 160 kmph. The project was undertaken by the RDSO around March. The design was ready within months and the first coach was manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory,Kapoorthala.
AK Mathur,Executive Director (Administration and Public relations) at RDSO,Lucknow, said: The double-decker AC chair car can accommodate 130 passengers nearly 70 per cent more than the usual ones. The coach has two floors connected with staircases. It has been provided with better suspension arrangements for comfort.
Mass production of coaches will take place in Kapoorthala. The trains may be run on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Howrah-Daund routes. In 2011-2012,six such trains will be built, said RDSO officials, besides the non-AC double-decker trains that are already in use.
The RDSO plans to design a double-decker local train for Mumbai and present it to the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation and Central and Western Railways.
