Double ton for Herwadkar

Herwadkar's marathon knock,he finished up with 241,came in just 248 balls,and he smashed 32 fours and two sixes.

A remarkable double-century by opener Akhil Herwadkar and the three century partnerships that he put on enabled DY Patil ‘A’ to rake up a massive 423 for 5 on the opening day of their three-day Times Shield Division A Cricket Tournament clash against Indian Oil at Nerul on Tuesday.

The U-19 World Cup star first added 100 for the third wicket with Sridip Mangela (45) then put on 110 for the fourth with Yogesh Takawale (48) before sharing a crucial 121-run stand for the fifth wicket in the company of Eknath Kerkar,who remained unbeaten on 52.

Another Mumbai opener Praful Waghela also ended up notching up a ton,scoring 149 to help Tata notch up 335 for 8 on the first day of their clash against Jain Irrigation at the Parsee Gymkhana. The plucky left-hander anchored the innings,and along the way shared crucial partnerships starting with 103 for the third wicket with Nikhil Patil Jr,who scored a half-century,and then put on 97 with erstwhile Mumbai all-rounder Wilkin Mota for the sixth wicket while medium-pacer N Ingle did keep the pressure on the Tata batting,finishing with figures of 5/67. Waghela faced 179 balls for his century,a knock studded with 20 fluent boundaries.

Veteran pacer Aavishkar Salvi starred for Bharat Petroleum as he snared a five-wicket haul to restrict Western Railway ‘B’ to 291 at the MIG ground in Bandra.

While Salvi’s 5/58 was the major talking point of the first day’s play,Parag Madgaikar also had his moment under the sun,remaining unbeaten on 95,faching 155 balls and striking 10 fours with two sixes. Asad Pathan and Bhargav Merai also contributed usefully with scores of over 40.

Meanwhile,at Nerul,medium-pacer Badre Alam and left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh took three wickets each to help Air-India skittle out D Y Patil ‘B’ for a lowly 181.

Yogesh Pawar was the only DY Patil batsman to put up a resistance,remaining unbeaten on 59. Air-India in response then lost early wickets before Sushant Marathe and Hrishikesh Kanitkar,who will resume on Wednesday on 34,steadied the ship to take them to 90 for 4 by stumps.
