In the wake of allegations that mangroves were hacked to beautify MMRDA staff quarters, the state environment department has decided to initiate an inquiry into the matter and take action if necessary. The MMRDA staff quarters also houses commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad.

Sena MLC Kiran Pawaskar raised a question in the Legislative Council on Friday over illegal mangrove hacking in the city especially in the suburban areas from Malad to Dahisar. He alleged that even MMRDA had hacked mangroves for the beautification of its residential colonies which houses Gaikwad. “They spent Rs 9 crore for the beautification and have damaged mangroves without permission,” Pawaskar said.

Minister for State (environment),Sachin Ahir, said the department would first verify the facts. “We will substantiate the information and then order an inquiry. If the facts are correct then they will have to face action,” he said.

Ahir also said that most of the cases in the western suburbs on mangrove hacking in salt-pan lands were already sub-judiced. “Many of these owners are abroad and therefore evade action. We have decided to take action on those who have co-ordinated on their behalf like their lawyers or others,” he said.

The Bombay High Court has banned mangrove hacking in Maharashtra for any private developmental work except for public work with court’s permission.
