The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which is currently working on the revision of the controversial draft Development Plan (DP) 2034 will take recommendations of its own ward officials from all 24 wards in the city, senior civic officials confirmed.
In the earlier process, the ward officials only acted as co-ordinators between citizens and administrations by conducting thematic and issue-related workshops in their own wards.
A civic official on condition of anonymity said, “The ward officials should have ideally been involved in the process as they know the ground realities of their respective wards. The DP department should take opinion specifically on the proposed land-use (PLU) maps in the draft.”

Most of the errors noted in the earlier draft were related to arbitrary road widening through residential buildings and religious structures including wrong markings of heritage structures, mainly in the island city. BMC recently appointed veteran IAS officer Ramanath Jha to head the draft revision process. The corporation has also done away with consultants involved in the earlier drafting process, officials confirmed.
Civic chief Ajoy Mehta said, “We have the best in-house resources to do the job. So it is definite we will take opinions from ward officials too.” BMC has processed about 35,000 of the 65,000-odd suggestions it received during the 60-day period between February and April, earlier this year. According to a directive issued by the state, BMC has to revise and republish the document by August.
