Despite deadline extension, over 33,000 seats under RTE in schools unclaimed
This year, a total of 3,05,152 applications were received for 1,09,087 seats under RTE in 8,863 schools across the state.

Over 33,000 seats under the Right To Education (RTE) Act in private schools across Maharashtra remain unclaimed despite a 10-day extension of deadline to confirm admissions to these seats, as per the RTE admission website.
This year, a total of 3,05,152 applications were received for 1,09,087 seats under RTE in 8,863 schools across the state.
From these, 1,01,967 students were selected through a lottery system. Initially these selected students were given a February 28 deadline to confirm the admissions.
However, due to the low confirmation rate, the primary education directorate, which conducts the RTE admissions, extended the deadline to March 10.
An official from the directorate said, “As per the process, students in the waiting list will now get seat allotment. But there is no declaration on further steps as of now because it is being contemplated if another extension should be granted for first round candidates to confirm admissions.”
After the first round of allotments of seats, there are 1,96,065 applicants who are waiting for allotment to seats under RTE.
“They will further have to be given an adequate amount of time to confirm admissions. This year, the RTE admissions have to conclude by the end of May,” added the official.
Director of Primary Education Sharad Gosavi was unavailable for comments.
As per school admissions under RTE, children from socially and economically backward classes are admitted to private and unaided schools on 25 percent reserved seats with the government reimbursing their fee.
