The Dindoshi police on Thursday arrested the plumbing supervisor Manohar Nadar (51) for not providing adequate safety gear to the worker who was cleaning the sewer in a Malad (East) building, leading to his death along with another person who jumped in to save him, while a third person is battling for life in the hospital. Nadar was arrested on the complaint of Husain Mendi Hasan Shaikh, the brother of Javed Shaikh, 36, who jumped in to save his brother Akib Shaikh, 19, and the worker Raghu Solanki. Another deceased has been identified as one Raghu Solanki, 68. As per the police complaint, on Wednesday afternoon, Hussain and his brother Javed were at home when their brother Akib’s friend Mangal Singh informed them that Akib lost consciousness after he entered a sewer line to save another labourer who too had fallen unconscious while cleaning the gutter chamber in the compound of Raheja Heights and Raheja Residency buildings near Ratnagiri hotel, Malad (East). Javed and Hussain rushed to the spot and saw Akib and another worker lying unconscious inside the sewer line which was around 15 feet deep. “I tried to enter the sewer using a rope to save them, but started feeling dizzy due to low oxygen level there. I aborted my attempt and came out, and still fell unconscious. When I gained consciousness I learned that after me, Javed too had entered the sewer to rescue Akib and another labour (Solanki), but he, too, fell unconscious. Later, police and fire brigade men rescued the three and rushed them to Trauma Centre in Jogeshwari where doctors declared Javed and Solanki brought dead while Akib was moved to ICU and is critical,” Hussain told the police. “Plumbing supervisor Manohar Nadar and others who were responsible for the workers’ safety did not take adequate safety measures due to which the incident took place,” Hussain stated in the FIR. “We have arrested the plumbing supervisor Manohar Nadar (51) on charges of sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life, or the personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. He was sent into judicial custody by the court on Thursday,” said Irfan Shaikh, senior inspector of Dindoshi police station. “We are investigating the matter. If any other person is found to be involved in the case, action will be taken against the person accordingly," Shaikh added.
