Cycle rally to endorse non-motorised transport

In yet another attempt to endorse non-motorised transport in the city,around 550 citizens from Mumbai,Navi Mumbai and Pune will take to the streets on bicycles early Sunday morning.

In yet another attempt to endorse non-motorised transport in the city,around 550 citizens from Mumbai,Navi Mumbai and Pune will take to the streets on bicycles early Sunday morning.

The cycle rally will start from Shagun Hall near Mulund Fire Brigade at 8 am and end at Airoli toll naka.

Fifty-year-old Vinod Punamiya,a Dombivli-based cyclist who had created a world record in 2007,is expected to join the rally.

“Cyclists from Pune,Belapur,Borivali,Malad,Bhayander and Mahim will also participate in the rally,” said Dr Manish Motwani,Rotary Club,Mulund Hill View. “Every year we organise programmes to spread awareness on global warming. In Copenhagen where the world climate summit held recently,around 40 per cent of the commuters use bicycles.”

Students from several schools like JJ Academy and Jai Bharat High School will also participate. Motwani said,“We would confer trophies on participating schools and certificates will be given to the students.”

Raj Janagam of I-initiate,an NGO that is organising the rally,said,“By January end,we plan to start a bicycle rental service for students to commute from Mulund station to city colleges. This is proposed by the students of Kelkar college,Mulund (E) and it will work on subscription basis. We have arranged for a parking lot near the railway station. A guard will be appointed to take care of the parking lot.”
