(Thanks to the quick thinking of a woman who lost over Rs 4 crore while ‘investing in shares’ on Instagram manager, cyber police – through its 1930 helpline number – managed to freeze 15 accounts in which the money had been transferred by fraudsters.
In the process, the woman managed to save Rs 3.8 crore of her defrauded amount.
DCP DS Swamy said that earlier this week, the woman had come across an Instagram advertisement to invest in shares. The woman clicked on the link and invested some amount. Over the next few days, the site showed that she had made big profits.
Over the next few days, the woman ended up investing over Rs 4 crore. However when she tried to withdraw the amount she had earned, she was unable to.
Realising she had been duped, she contacted her husband. Her husband knew of the cyber police station in BKC and they both went there.
At the police station the police used the 1930 helpline apparatus to contact various banks where the money had been transferred. “We managed to freeze 15 bank accounts where they money had been transferred due to which we could save a major chunk of the lost amount,” an officer said.
The officer said that thanks to the 1930 cyber helpline number, they had managed to save over Rs 26 crore in 2023.
