Thirteen years after initiating the process and almost abandoning it,Central Railway (CR) has finally installed the train management system (TMS),which facilitates real-time monitoring of trains on large screens in a control room. CRs TMS is on the lines of the Western Railway (WR) system thats seven years old.
The system housed inside the newly constructed control room at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) will be inaugurated by Vivek Sahai, chairman of the Indian Railway Board,on April 16. The TMS has been installed at an expenditure of Rs 48 crore, including the Rs 12 crore incurred on the mobile communication system that was installed four years ago on the suburban section of CR.
Sources said tender for installing TMS on the suburban section were invited in 1998,but the quoted rate of Rs 65 crore was considered too high and the process was called off. Later,TMS was introduced on WR at a cost of Rs 26 crore in 2004. In 2007,CR awarded a Rs 12-crore contract to US-based Motorola company for installing mobile communication system,a key component of the TMS. Two years ago, tender was again invited for installing TMS and the contract awarded to Bombardier, which had installed TMS in WR, said a CR official.
After inauguration, the control room off platform number 7 of CST will have 16 display boards showing train movements. Two TMS controllers will monitor the green, red and yellow moving lines on giant display boards. One controller will monitor train operation between CST and Kurla and other from Kurla to Kalyan, the official said.
TMS will provide effective method of regulating trains by monitoring their movement and facilitates timely decisions for diversion of trains, induction and withdrawal of rakes, planning reversal of rakes, etc.
The system also generates punctuality reports, unusual incident reports, train graphs, rake and crew links and other management reports.
