CR installs new system for real-time train monitoring

Sources said tender for installing TMS on the suburban section were invited in 1998,but the quoted rate of Rs 65 crore was considered too high and the process was called off. Later,TMS was introduced on WR at a cost of Rs 26 crore in 2004. In 2007,CR awarded a Rs 12-crore contract to US-based Motorola company for installing mobile communication system,a key component of the TMS. “Two years ago,tender was again invited for installing TMS and the contract awarded to Bombardier,which had installed TMS in WR,” said a CR official.

After inauguration,the control room off platform number 7 of CST will have 16 display boards showing train movements. Two TMS controllers will monitor the green,red and yellow moving lines on giant display boards. One controller will monitor train operation between CST and Kurla and other from Kurla to Kalyan,” the official said.

TMS will provide effective method of regulating trains by monitoring their movement and facilitates timely decisions for diversion of trains,induction and withdrawal of rakes,planning reversal of rakes,etc.

The system also generates punctuality reports,unusual incident reports,train graphs,rake and crew links and other management reports.
