The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Central Railway (CR) have registered 175 cases against rooftop travellers since January 1 following orders from the Railway board to take action against them.

While the section from Kalyan to Thane was charged with 25,000 Volt Alternating Current on January 11, special drives are being carried out to curb rooftop travelling since January 1. A fine of Rs 27, 700 has been collected from offenders. Maximum offenders were caught from Mankhurd (69 cases), Thane (32), Nahur-Mulund section (29) and Wadala Road (20).

“We are undertaking special drives to apprehend people travelling on the roof of trains. We have also pasted posters in trains and at railway stations to inform commuters about the new traction and the dangers of rooftop travelling. A sustained drive will have to be carried out to reduce the offence,” said Alok Bohra, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF, CR.

The drives were initiated after the chief commissioner of Railway safety, in December, asked the Railway board to go ahead with the commissioning of the new traction along with certain conditions. CR is also seeking help of radio channels to reach out to commuters.
