The police said that the two accused opted to steal as they were jobless and were struggling to feed the family.
According to the police officials, the incident took place in the afternoon on December 12 near CP Tank in Girgaon. The 71-year-old woman had gone to attend a function and her son had dropped her. However after the function, while she was walking towards her home, one of the two accused identified as Sagar Kharwa pushed her, pulled her gold chain and escaped.
An officer said, “The woman fell on the floor and had raised an alarm for help but before anyone could react, Kharwa escaped from the spot.” The 71-year-old then consulted her family members after which she went to VP Road police station to lodge a complaint. A case was then registered under relevant sections of robbery.
A police team was then deputed to detect the case after which officials along with the senior citizen visited the spot.
They checked the CCTV footage of the cameras installed in the shops and on the roads following which with the help of the complainant, the police zeroed down on the suspect. “As we followed him via CCTV footage, a woman could also be seen running with him. So we showed the CCTV grab to our sources who identified him,” said an officer.
