To crack the mystery of a three-year-old lying abandoned on Palm Beach road last week, NRI police station personnel are at present making rounds of nursery schools and play homes in Belapur and nearby areas with the photograph of the girl.
The girl, who has only been identified as ‘Chhakuli’, was found on September 12 by a motorist and has been in the custody of the NRI police since. The same day, the police found the body of her mother in Belapur village. Post mortem examination reports indicated that she had been throttled to death. A tattoo on her hand identified the deceased as Surekha Atangale. Chhakuli, however, has not been able to tell the police too many details about her family, and her mother’s murder remains a mystery.
“Chhakuli has not even been able to tell us her official name. She has told us that her father’s name is Subhash, but has not been able to tell us his surname. Atangale could be Surekha’s maiden name and hence we do not even have a full name to pursue. Over the past two days, we have visited every nursery school and children’s play home in and around the Belapur village with Chhakuli’s photograph to check if she attended any of these institutions, but in vain. We have now widened our search to Vashi and Mankhurd,” said Senior Police Inspector Vishnu Redkar, NRI police station.
Redkar added that they had also contacted cellular service providers for details of all customers with the names Surekha and Subhash in Belapur area.
“Chhakuli has only said that her mother fainted in the house, and her father took her to the doctor. We are making inquiries in various areas to trace Subhash, as he might be able to provide some clues about the murder,” Redkar added.
