Cop suspended for providing protection to disputed land

Senior Police Inspector Maruti Naik from Vile Parle was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly ‘providing protection’ to disputed land.

Senior Police Inspector Maruti Naik from Vile Parle was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly ‘providing protection’ to disputed land. According to the city police sources,Naik had provided security for a plot at disputed land in Vile Parle (E) on behest of a construction company.

“The dispute over the property in Sambhaji Nagar at Vile Parle (East) has been going on between Prime Developers and RKDI Constructions for the past one year. The latter was in possession of the property and Prime Developers claimed rights to the plot, leading to the dispute,” said a senior police officer, who did not wish to be named.

According to the officer,in such disputes the Criminal Procedure Code demands the matter be taken to the magistrate for redressal, and a receiver is appointed for the property.

“However,in this case,Naik deployed a mobile van and some police personnel for 10-15 days at the spot at the behest of one party. Furthermore,he did this without the consent of the superiors, which amounts to grounds for enquiry. The matter was later brought to the notice of the higher police officials, leading to suspension of Naik and an enquiry to be initiated against him,” said the officer.

When contacted,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 8) Brijesh Singh confirmed the suspension, but refused to elaborate.

“This issue is a matter of enquiry and cannot be commented upon at this stage,” said Singh. Naik was unavailable for comment.

Incidentally,a few days after the mobile van and police personnel were removed from the plot,a manager from Prime Developers reached the spot on September 30 accompanied with 25 to 30 men who allegedly attempted take control of the land, resulting in a scuffle between Prime Developers and staff from RKDI Constructions.

Further enquiries were being conducted to trace the remaining accused,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vakola division) Arvind Mahabdi.
