Cop among 5 held for robbery

The Crime Branch has arrested five persons,including a police constable,on charges of robbing a business establishment.

The constable,Arjun Pawar,29,is attached to the Vashi police station in Navi Mumbai. The others arrested are Mahesh Satve (34),Ravikant Padiyachi (31),Yogesh Bhoir (26) and Vijay Ghodke (35).

Iinspector Nishikant Patil of Crime Branch Unit 2 said the accused had gone to Satyam Impacs on September 8 and introduced themselves as Crime Branch officers. “They said they had come to speak about a case. The employees asked for identity proof but all the accused showed them were handcuffs. They then went on to rob the place of cash and goods worth Rs 1.25 lakh.”

The case was registered at the VP Road Police Station,and later transferred to the Crime Branch unit. “When we examined the CCTV footage,one person looked suspiciously familiar. One of our officers identified him as Vijay Ghodke,who was later picked up from Chembur,” Patil said. On interrogation,Ghodke revealed the names of others. “We zeroed down on all of them and arrested them. They have admitted the crime; we produced them in court and they have been remanded in police custody till September 26,” Patil said.

Police have launched a hunt for two persons — Munna and Chetan — who allegedly helped the accused with information about the place.
