In the MLC elections on December 18,the Congress is all set to fight against ally NCP in the Nashik graduates constituency. Of the nine MLC seats for which elections are being held, eight are from local bodies and one is from the Nashik graduates constituency. While Congressman Amrish Patel is set to be elected unopposed as he is the only candidate from the Dhule-Nandurbar local body constituency, the Congress and the NCP have reached an understanding on seven of the remaining eight seats.
But in Nashik graduates constituency, the Congress has fielded Sudhir Tambe (brother-in-law of state agriculture minister Balasaheb Thorat) against NCPs Nitin Thakre. The BJP has fielded Prasad Hire.
According to an understanding between the Congress and the NCP,the former would contest from local body constituencies in Mumbai,Ahmednagar,Nagpur,Dhule-Nandurbar and Kolhapur, while the latter would contest from Solapur,Akola and Buldhana.
Sources said that the NCP had mounted pressure on the Congress to withdraw its nominee from Nashik graduates constituency in lieu of support for its MLC candidate in Ahmednagar. The Congress has refused to withdraw its nominee.
For the two seats from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC),controlled by the Sena-BJP,the Sena has nominated former Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Ramdas Kadam, while the BJP has fielded Madhu Chavan. The Sena is keen on rehabilitating Kadam, who had lost the recent Assembly election from Guhagar. The Congress has nominated former MLA and trade unionist Bhai Jagtap, who lost the Assembly poll from Jogeshwari.
