The foundation stone for Navi Mumbai’s first Metro rail route was laid on Sunday by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

The foundation stone for Navi Mumbai’s first Metro rail route was laid on Sunday by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. The project is being undertaken by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).

The Rs-984 Belapur-Pendhar Metro link project is likely to be completed in three years. The 11-km line will have 11 stations and cover areas of Kharghar. The CIDCO has also planned another Metro corridor on the Khandeshwar-Taloja link and has appointed Louis Berger as the consultant for the project.

With the change in land use and considering Navi Mumbai’s increasing population and their transportation needs,it became necessary to review the transportation system of Navi Mumbai. “The need to establish north-south and east-west between all the residential nodes,to establish connectivity between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai and ultimately to decrease the travelling time; the Metro rail was found to be ideal,” said a press note from CIDCO.
