The brilliant Atul Kumar on winning the META award,Hamlet and opening his residency project

You play a clown for the second time in Hamlet—The Clown Prince. Was it easier this time?
It was as easy or difficult as when we,for the first time, did C for Clown nine years ago. Though I am still playing a clown, and with the same name, the structure and text are different. But then had it been easier,it wouldn’t have been fun.

How have you contributed to the shaping of this devised play?
My contribution is as much as my fellow actors. We all worked on developing this play.

Why do we not see such a fine actor like you on stage more often?
I direct a lot. These days,I have taken a break from directing as I’m spending more time with my young daughter.

Has babysitting eaten into theatre time?
Not at all. I have just decided to give her as much time as I can for the time being. But I will be back to direct plays soon.

Tell us about your association with Hamlet’s director Rajat Kapoor?
We have known each other for more than 25 years. I have acted in plays directed by him since our Delhi days.

After winning five awards, what is lined up next for Hamlet?
In August,we are going to perform at the Hindu Theatre Festival. Before that,we will be travelling to Chandigarh.

How important are such awards for you?
Personally,I don’t think much about such awards. However,on a larger level,it helps the plays and theatre in getting more recognition.

What’s the status of The Company Theatre’s project of international residency for theatre research and performance?
The residency is likely to be operational by next year. For now,its construction at Kamshet is going to begin. We have some funds for it,but we still need more. Please let me know if you know someone who would like make monetary contribution for it. Or let those wanting to make donations, about us.
