The BMC budget for 2014-2015 will aim at providing better healthcare services in the suburbs, with plans to start construction of a new super-specialty hospital in the Eastern suburbs and five new maternity homes in various areas detected through gap analysis.
Apart from a 600-bed facility in S Ward (Bhandup), the budget will also allot funds for major expansion of Govandi Centenary (Shatabdi) Hospital and M T Agrawal Hospital in Mulund. The bed-strength of Govandi Shatabdi and M T Agrawal Hospitals will be increased to 520 from their current capacity of 210 and 218.
Dr Seema Malik, head of secondary healthcare services, said, “The work will begin in 2014. It will take three-four years to be completed.”
The proposed hospital in Bhandup will cater to patients in the Eastern suburbs. Govandi Shatabdi and M T Agrawal will both get an additional hospital building for super-specialty facilities.
Civic officials said 10 per cent beds would be reserved as ‘paying beds’ to cater to the middle-income group while around 50 beds would be earmarked for ICUs in each hospital.
“We plan to add 1,000 beds in the Eastern suburbs in three years,” said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.
The BMC budget will also focus on civic maternity homes. While construction of five new maternity homes in Malad, Pathanwadi, Shivaji Nagar, Maharashtra Nagar and Qureshi Nagar will begin in 2014, six maternity homes will get upgrades. Two maternity homes — Shirodkar in Vile Parle and Deonar — will be demolished and rebuilt.
