Following a plea filed by arrested artist Chintan Upadhyay, Thane jail authorities will provide him medical assistance along with blankets, pillow and rugs to sleep on, behind bars.
Arrested on December 28 for allegedly murdering his wife Hema and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani, Chintan moved the Bombay High Court claiming he suffers from spondylitis and, therefore, he cannot sleep on the floor. He also complained that he was not given adequate medical assistance in jail.
The High Court had directed the jail authorities to file a reply on his plea. On Thursday, the prosecutor appearing on behalf of the jail authorities assured that Chintan would be provided with a pillow, blankets, a rug and bedsheet.
The prosecutor also informed that Chintan’s family can deposit a maximum amount of Rs 2,000 in his jail canteen account for food and other purposes. Chintan, she added, would also get medical assistance from the in-house doctor.
Mumbai police suspect that Chintan could be linked to the plot to lure his wife with a video which his Jaipur-based domestic help claimed to have made. Hema and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani were killed when they went to watch the clip which was offered to her by Vidyadhar Rajbhar, the prime accused who is now absconding. Police, however, believe the clip was just a trap. The bodies of Hema and her advocate Bhambhani were found wrapped in plastic sheets and dumped in a drain in Kandivali.
