THE MUMBAI police has registered an FIR against Shashikala alias Baby Patankar and one Parashuram Munde for allegedly defrauding a 61-year-old businessman of Rs 2 crore. The accused are alleged to have promised him “cheap gold seized by the customs department.” Patankar was earlier arrested in two cases related to narcotics, but was eventually discharged from drug charges in both the cases.
The complainant in the case, a Cuffe Parade resident, had decided to start a business of buying and selling gold, for which he asked some of his friends to contact people related to this field. According to the complaint, in October 2021, a person named Devkumar Roy introduced him to a woman named Sunita Chaudhary.
Through Chaudhary, he came in contact with Munde. Munde gained the complainant’s confidence by telling him that he was the Director of M/s RRM Gold Trading Company and that his company was in the business of buying and selling gold.
He then called him to Baby Patankar’s residence on the first floor of a chawl near Worli. Baby said she had five kg gold and the complainant paid Rs 1.27 crore for three kilos of gold. He gave her Rs 70 lakh the next day. Baby then asked him to wait saying she would get the gold but did not turn up.
When she did not turn up the next day as well, the complainant suspected something amiss. When he questioned Munde, the latter tried to intimidate him, telling him about Baby’s ‘criminal background’. Munde asked him to forget about the money. Finally, the complainant approached the Crime Branch and lodged a complaint. Accordingly, the police registered a case and started an investigation.
