(File photo) In a bid to increase passenger safety and prevent local train accidents, collisions and derailments caused due to human error, the Central Railway (CR) has started installing audio alert units inside motorman’s cabin in local trains that warn about red signals. The units are being installed in EMU (electrical multiple units) rakes.
Central Railway is incharge of mainline train operation (CSMT-Kalyan, Karjat Kasara, Badlapur Titwala) including the harbour line that runs from CSMT-Panvel, Goregaon.
The new alert system installed in the motorman coach of local trains will make train travel safer, as per the release issued by CR public relation office on Tuesday, August 15. CR officials said that after the train passes the yellow signal, an audio alert, if the next signal is red, will warn the motorman to watch out.
These devices have been installed in 90 trains of the total 151 rakes (EMU). The device costs Rs 18,000 per rake (Rs 9,000 per cabin – for the motorman and guard cabin at both ends of the train).
The provision of audio alert units will help avoid SPAD (signal passing at danger) and accidents on railway lines. The CR official said that with Mumbai’s suburban network being one of the world’s busiest networks, this audio alert is crucial to ensure passenger safety.
The remaining 71 rakes will get the audio alert devices by March 2024.
