Central Railway (CR) workshops at Matunga, Parel, is converting ageing Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches with residual life of five years into automobile carriers and accident relief trains (ARTs). The converted coaches will have a total codal life of 25 years.
As per the CR, in the current financial year from April to September 2023, 57 ICF coaches have been converted into NMGHS automobile carrier and 4 ICF coaches have been converted into ART.
The prototype conversion of ICF coaches into Automobile carriers is due to the increase in load, said the CR official. The introduction of additional ARTs will help in emergency situations at time of accidents, added the official.
The Central Railway transported 74,318 automobiles in the first six months of this financial year 2023-24 against 57,431 automobiles transported during the same period last year.
As per the CR , the new design automobile carrier with side entry (NMGHS) has a higher payload capacity of 18 tonnes compared to 12 tonnes of the earlier version. Higher carrying capacity with side entry also permits this coach to be used as parcel coach. The newly designed coaches have been designed to run at the speed of 110 kmph as against the existing 75 kmph.
