Central Railway completes platform widening work at Thane and CST
At Thane station, the widening of platform no. 5/6 was undertaken in a 63 hour block. Platform 5/6 at Thane station is one of the busiest platforms in Mumbai, handling more than 300 suburban as well as mail express trains.
Railways concluded their blocked for the work of platform extension and interchange work at the CSTM end in the afternoon . (Express Photo By Ganesh Shirsekar)The Central Railway (CR) on Sunday said it has completed widening work of platforms 5 and 6 at Thane as well as Electronic Interlocking system at CSMT for extension of Platform 10 and 11 on Sunday.
After CST platforms 11 and 12 were extended by 385 metres, the length has now increased to 690 metres and can now accommodate 24-coach passenger trains.
The work was undertaken in a 36-hour block from 00.30 on 1st June to 12.30 on 2nd June on the CSMT-Byculla main line and CSMT-Vadala Road harbour line.
The work involved assembling, laying and dismantling of turnouts, erection of Overhead Equipment (OHE) portal structures including erection of two special portals of 53 metres covering all 10 lines.
Central Railway’s team of senior officers and supervisors included 15 Senior Section Engineers heading 20 teams of around 400 labourers working around the clock to complete the task within the targeted time. (Express Photo By Ganesh Shirsekar)
A total of 250 workers were deployed for the completion of this work.

Widening by 2-3 metres for the entire length of the platform was done by placing 785 precast hollow blocks. This is the first time such types of blocks were used for platform construction.
Central Railway’s team of senior officers and supervisors included 15 Senior Section Engineers heading 20 teams of around 400 labourers working around the clock to complete the task within the targeted time.
In order to ensure safe and smooth working during the block, 930 suburban trains were cancelled. In addition some mail express trains were also cancelled while some were short terminated / short originated at and from Dadar, Panvel, Nashik, Manmad and Pune stations.
