The Mumbai police registered a case against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray and 20 others on Saturday after they ‘inaugurated’ the under-construction Delisle Bridge in Lower Parel late on Thursday night.

The case was lodged after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials lodged a complaint at N M Joshi police station on Friday.

As per the BMC, Thackeray, MLCs Sunil Shinde and Sachin Ahir, former mayors Kishori Pednekar and Snehal Ambekar and several others reached Delisle Bridge at around 9 pm and removed the barricades placed in front of it.

“The group illegally inaugurated the bridge by breaking a coconut on the road. They did it without consulting the BMC officials and it was opened for vehicular movement,” a police officer said.

The BMC officials said the bridge was nearing completion and work is still underway due to which it is not suitable to be opened for traffic.

“I was at home when I came to know through social media that the bridge had been illegally inaugurated on Thursday night. Accordingly, we inspected the spot on Friday morning and found that it was illegally opened and there was vehicular movement on the bridge,” Purushottam Ingale, a BMC sub-engineer, said in his complaint.

BMC officials further alleged that the Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders had endangered people’s lives by opening the bridge. The civic officials then barricaded the bridge and closed its operation, the police said.

The BMC officials subsequently reported the matter to their senior officials and later after which they went to N M Joshi police station and lodged a complaint on Friday.

A case was registered under sections 143 (punishment), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 447 (criminal trespass) of the Indian Penal Code.
