Doing away with the prevalent practice of entrance tests for admission to Masters of Business Administration (MBA), the Maharashtra State Skills University (MSSU) has found a unique way to admit students to its first batch of MBA in Innovations and New Venture Management: interested candidates will have to present their start-up pitch.

As the application process has started for admissions, aspirants are asked to submit their forms along with an eight-slider presentation on their start-up idea which will cover several aspects such as problem statement, proposed solution, competitor analysis, business plan, ideas to scale it up along with financial projections.

Candidates will then have to make the presentations in front of a panel of experts before a list of selected candidates is declared.

“The idea is to assess an applicant’s ability to think defiantly. There are no marks to the idea itself, but the presenter’s way of going about it, thinking out-of-the-box, creative approach among all. After the presentation, the panel will question the candidates to assess all such qualities,” said Dr Apoorva Palkar, Founding Vice-Chancellor of the MSSU, Maharashtra’s first state-run university specialising in skill development among youngsters.

The new university is starting to function this academic year with a list of innovative courses and admission links are available on their official website.

MBA in Innovations and New Venture Management is one among those.

This two-year full-time MBA course is aimed at helping students to recognise and grow their enterprising skills for setting up a successful start-up. With an intake capacity of 30-students, this course will be a combination of class-work and on-the-job training.

Dr. Palkar explained that the structure of the course is decided to provide students with flexibility to work on their start-up too.

“In case the student is still thinking on a viable idea, the practical training component will include he or she working with an ongoing start-up,” she said.

The course is in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Innovation Society, which is established by the department of skills, entrepreneurship and innovation of Maharashtra government to promote start-ups. “Students enrolled in the MBA in Innovations and New Venture Management at the MSSU will be eligible for all the benefits offered by the Society which includes funding too, along with making use of incubation centres and multiple other schemes aimed to promote start-ups,” told. Dr. Palkar.
