Camera, card skimming device found attached to ATM

The device was discovered last week after the camera, which had been stuck to the machine, fell off and was noticed by a customer

A skimming device and a camera were found attached to an Automated Transaction Machine (ATM) in Dombivli last week. The Ram Nagar police in Dombivli have initiated investigations into the matter.

According to the Ram Nagar police, the device was discovered on Wednesday last week, after the camera, which had been stuck to the machine in a way that it looked like a part of the machine, fell off and was noticed by a customer.

The customer then raised an alarm and a small crowd gathered at the ATM centre. At the same time, two constables with the Ram Nagar police happened to pass by, and on seeing the commotion, stopped and investigated. A team was later sent to the ATM to make inquiries.

“The skimming device was attached in place of the slot where the customer is supposed to insert his ATM card, and is designed to capture the details of the card as soon as it is inserted. At the same time, the camera, which is positioned directly over the keypad and is difficult to detect as a foreign object, captured the ATM PIN of the customer while it is entered. The camera has an extention which can be plugged into a USB drive slot of a computer, after which all the data it records can be accessed,” said Police Sub Inspector, Avinash Palde, Ram Nagar police station.

The police have seized the devices and are trying to identify and apprehend the culprits responsible.

“We checked the CCTV camera footage  but it has failed to record any footage beyond July 11. Inquiries have been made with the branch manager of the bank. We are conducting further inquiries,” Palde added.

So far, the police have not received any complaints from users of the ATM of money being siphoned from their accounts, and the police are in touch with the bank authorities to check for any victims who might not have realised that their money has been siphoned or for victims who might have not reported such incidents, said officers.
