The city is set to get its second cable-stayed bridge, after the one on the 4.7-km Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to construct such as bridge across the Manori Creek, aimed at providing easy access to Marve and up to Bhayander.
The MMRDA on Monday invited tenders for private contractors to build the 500-metre bridge liking the two existing roads at the ends of the creek. Two portions of the sea link are cable-stayed,one spanning 500 metres in the centre and the other 350 metres at the Worli end.
Currently, the ends of the creek are not connected and motorist have to take a long detour to reach Manori and Uttan. There are roads on both ends; we propose to bridge them with a cable-stayed bridge, said S R Nandargikar,MMRDA chief engineer.
He said the cable stayed bridge will cost an estimated Rs 210 crore and the bridge is expected to be completed in 18 months after the contract is awarded.
Considering the growing demand of additional surface transport facilities, the bridge across the creek will provide an additional coastal road for north-south traffic and help release the congestion on SV Road and the Western Express Highway,he said. It will be another link of sorts and will provide better access to areas between Manori and Bhayander, Nandargikar added.
Bids for technical qualification have been sought by December 21,following which the financial bids will be sought from those qualified. Technical qualification bids could possibly be opened on December 21 itself.
