The Mumbai Police are on the lookout for nine individuals who duped a 43-year-old real estate businessman from Pune and his partner of Rs 25 lakh by luring them with a money-doubling scheme and later staged a fake police raid to rob them.

According to police, the complainant, a Pune resident living with his wife and two children, was introduced to a man identified as Pravin Mungse through his business partner on April 15. Mungse allegedly offered to double their money by exchanging Rs 25 lakh for Rs 50 lakh in “market-usable” old currency notes.

After a week of deliberation, the businessmen agreed to proceed. On April 30, they arrived in Chembur, Mumbai, in a Toyota Fortuner, carrying ₹16.5 lakh and Rs 8.5 lakh respectively. There, they met Mungse and his associate, Dashrath Lohote (58), who took them to Swastik Chamber to meet another alleged accomplice, Mukund Jha.

Soon after, two unidentified men joined them—one wearing a white shirt and jeans, the other in a black shirt and cream trousers. They directed the group to drive to Pragati Building along the Eastern Express Highway.

Around 5 pm, as the businessman displayed the cash outside their vehicle, a white Maruti Ertiga arrived. Four men emerged carrying sticks and posed as police officers. In the chaos that followed, they seized the bag containing the cash, pretended to arrest the man in the black shirt, and fled toward Thane.

The businessman attempted to follow the car but lost track after several kilometres. “It became clear that Mungse, Lohote, Jha, the others, and the fake police officers were all part of a coordinated racket,” the complainant stated.

The victims filed a complaint at Nehru Nagar police station early Thursday. Police have registered a case of cheating and impersonation and are currently reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify the accused.
