Bullet train corridor: First full span box girder launched in Palghar
As per officials at NHSRCL, the deployment of such girders enables construction activity to proceed considerably quicker than with segmental techniques

The first full span pre-stressed concrete (PSC) box girder has been launched in Maharashtra for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor. The launch on Saturday was done at Sakhare village in Dahanu of Palghar district with a full span launching gantry.
According to National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), this is the first-of-its-kind girder installed in Maharashtra, where 2,575 full span girders of 40 metres length are to be installed along the 135 km elevated section between Shilphata and Gujarat border.
Each girder is approximately 970 tonnes heavy cast using 390 cubic metres of concrete and 42 tonnes of steel.
As per officials at NHSRCL, the deployment of such girders enables construction activity to proceed considerably quicker than with segmental techniques.
“Launching the first full span girder in Maharashtra is a significant milestone. This method will enable us to speed up viaduct construction in the state,” said an NHSRCL official.
The bullet train corridor in Maharashtra is more than 156 km long, comprising 135 km of viaducts, 17 km of segmental girders, 2.3 km of steel bridges, three elevated stations at Thane, Virar and Boisar and seven mountain tunnels totaling approximately 6 km.
Before this, the first slab casting was carried out at Virar and Boisar stations, total 48 km piers had been completed across the route, 2.1 km tunnel heading in Palghar was constructed and an underground station excavation at BKC was done where 83 per cent work has been done. The casting of base slabs as deep as almost 100 feet has already started at both ends of the BKC.
As many 13 casting yards have been planned in Maharashtra out of which five are already commissioned. They enable girder castings to be stored ahead and cast beforehand to provide uninterrupted supply for viaduct construction.
Officials said that the Maharashtra project is progressing gradually in parallel with Gujarat where construction of viaducts through full span girders has been in progress since 2021.
“With the recent commissioning at Dahanu, Maharashtra becomes the second state after Gujarat to use this system. It will ensure timely completion of the viaduct and align with overall completion schedules,” the officer added.
