A ground plus three structure collapsed in Thakurli in Thane district late on Tuesday night, leaving at least 20 residents trapped in the rubble. The figure of those injured or killed is yet to become clear.
According to the police, heavy rains that have lashed Thane all of Tuesday, is being cited as the reason for the collapse. The disaster occurred at 11 pm in Thakurli’s Cholegaon locality. The police has identified the collapsed structure as Matrukrupa Building.
“We have rescued between 20 and 25 persons thus far, but fear that just as many people are trapped in the wreckage,” said Dilip Gund, Chief Fire Officer, Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation.
At the time of going to press, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had departed for Thakurli from its base at Andheri Sports Complex. “We received a call from the municipal corporation at 11.35 pm and dispatched a team immediately. The information we have received is that the top floor of the building had been emptied of residents before the collapse occurred. We will know the severity of the situation once the team reaches the site,” said Alok Avasthy, Commandant, 5th Battalion, NDRF.
