(Source: File)Two brothers who work as drivers escaped with a bag containing Rs 45 lakh belonging to a Chartered Accountant on September 19. As the police started chasing them, they fled to Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and finally to Bihar. The duo was placed under arrest on Sunday and Rs 36 lakh in cash has been recovered so far.
An official said that on September 19, around 8 pm, the complainant Tej Prakash, a Wadala resident and a CA, had come to see his granddaughter. Trusting Nitesh Mahto, who had been working as a driver for nearly six months, he kept a bag containing Rs 45 lakh in his car. As per police, he was attending an auction later and hence carrying the cash.
After he left to see his granddaughter, Mahto spoke to his elder brother Deepak who also works as a driver in the city and was the one who told Prakash to hire his brother. Deepak worked near Prakash’s office and hence knew him. Deepak told his younger brother to pick up the bag and flee from the spot.
The duo along with another relative then took a train and fled to Pune. From Pune, they took another train the next day. By this time, the complainant had approached the Govandi police who had started tracking the accused. When the police team boarded the train at a station in MP, they found the brothers and the relative missing.
“They had already left the train and based on technical intelligence we found that they were on a road headed to UP. The police team then went to UP, “an official said. The brothers would keep switching off their phone and the police had to wait to get updates on their location.
Eventually, the police team found they were headed to Bihar, from where they hailed. Finally on Saturday, the police team nabbed the brothers from Bihar where they were issued a notice to appear before the police. As the brothers came to the city, they were placed under arrest on Sunday. An official said they have recovered over Rs 36 lakh from the accused persons so far.
